FAQ

How to choose a hood’s size?
The hood should be wider than the cooking surface, otherwise the air extraction and the hood’s performance will be low.

What is an appropriate installation height over the cooker surface according to the safety regulations and considering its full functionality?
There are firm rules for gas hobs: the minimum distance is 75 cm. These strict safety requirements are set because an open flame can damage the hood. If the hood is installed too low the grease trapped in the filters may ignite. For electric and induction hobs a distance of 65 cm is recommended between the cooking surface and the hood. In both cases it is not recommended to install the cooker hood higher, as the performance will decrease and fat particles and odours might not be absorbed.

Do I have to earth the cooker hood?
Yes, you do. If the hood is not earthed, the lights and  electronic control unit may burn out, and the hood with an electronic control may spontaneously turn on by itself during power surges.

What determines the hood’s extraction performance?
The hood’s efficiency depends on the following:

  1. motor power and a correct calculation of required extraction performance
  2. the hood’s size (the larger the size the larger the coverage area);
  3. the presence of carbon filters and their amount (in a recirculation mode);
  4. the type of grease filters (acrylic or aluminum; the number of layers and sections is also important);
  5. operating mode (in a recirculation mode the air purifies by passing through grease and carbon filters and then returns to the kitchen, while in an extraction mode the goes into a ventilation shaft − thus the latter method is more effective)

What criteria should be taken into account when choosing a cooker hood?
The hood’s extraction performance depends on the size of the room where the hood is installed: it is recommended to choose the hood that extracts at least 12 changes of air per hour (according to the rules set by the Russian Federal Service for Surveillance on Consumer Rights Protection and Human Wellbeing, or Rospotrebnadzor). Normally, it is also necessary to consider the hob’s size (the hood should be wider than the hob) and usual cooking methods.

What is the difference between ducted and recirculating cooker hoods?
Ducted hoods are connected to the duct and remove air to the outside, while recirculation hoods (with filters) purify the air through carbon filters and recycle it back into the kitchen.

Does the hood’s performance affect its lifespan?
Yes, it does. The higher the hood’s performance level the longer it lasts. It happens because powerful cooker hoods do not usually work at full capacity.

How to choose a duct for a cooker hood?
When selecting a duct pay close attention to the diameter of the coupling flange, included in the package, there are two standard diameters: 120 or 150 mm. You cannot narrow or considerably bend the duct, because it will negatively influence the hood’s performance. The ducts made of thin aluminum foil rustle when the hood is turned on. Whereas the ducts made of thick aluminum foil do not have this drawback, they still do not provide 100% sound insulation. Therefore it is recommended to use flexible circular PVC boxes, not corrugated: they reduce noise and do not create air resistance. There are also rectangular ducts. If you choose to use this type make sure that the diameter of the outlet flange matches the duct’s width to avoid narrowing at the join.

Is it true that a good cooker hood helps keeping the ceiling and furniture in the kitchen clean?
Yes, it is absolutely true. A good cooker hood not only removes odours, but also extracts vapours, steam and soot. Moreover it keeps grease particles from the air so they do not gather on kitchen appliances and furniture, thus preserving your kitchen for years.

What are the functions of metal and carbon filters?
Metal grease filters absorb fat particles from the air during cooking. The filters consist of several layers of mesh filter pads set in a special way. The main function of carbon filters is to clean unpleasant odours from the air during cooking.

How often should I wash the metal filters?
The frequency of cleaning metal filters depends on the frequency of the hood operation, it is usually recommended to wash them at least once a month. You can wash them manually with hot water and detergent which breaks up grease or in the dishwasher, programmed for gentle cleaning. The filter should be removed carefully so as not to damage its aluminum structure.

How often should I change the carbon filters?
The carbon filters working in the recirculation mode are not washable and require periodic replacement. The frequency of replacement depends on the frequency of the hood operation of the hood, it is generally recommended to change them once every 3 - 4 months.

If the cooker hood operates in an extraction mode, is it necessary to remove carbon filters?
Yes, it is absolutely necessary, otherwise the performance will reduce up to 20%.

Is it possible to avoid penetration of odours from outside when using the common ventilation system?
The installation of non-return valve helps to avoid penetration of unpleasant odours from outside when using the common ventilation system. The non-return valve consists of two plastic dampers, which open during extraction and close when the hood is turned off.

Which operating modes does the cooker hood have?
Modern hoods usually can operate in two modes, extraction and recirculation.
In an extraction mode the motor flange is connected with PVC circular duct or a plastic box, which diverts the exhaust air (odours, smoke, soot) into the ventilation shaft.
In a recirculation mode (if it is impossible to set the hood in an extraction mode) the motor can work with a charcoal filter, which absorbs odours. The exhaust air passes through grease filters and a carbon filter(s), and then purified air comes out in the kitchen. It should be noted that the recirculation mode decreases the performance up to 30%.

What diameter of the duct does the cooker hood need to extract air outside?
The diameter of the duct for air extraction depends on the power of the motor. It is determined by the tests taken with specific standards. It is highly important to maintain the exact diameter throughout the whole length of the duct. Moreover the duct has to go slightly upward in horizontal sections, avoid curves and be no longer than 5 - 7m in vertical sections.

What are the functions of grease and carbon filters?
Metal grease filters are designed to absorb fat particles from the air during cooking. The filters consist of several layers of mesh filter pads set in a special way. The main function of carbon filters is to clean unpleasant odours from the air during cooking.

Do I need to extract carbon filters if the hood works in an extraction mode?
Only several low-priced hoods have a carbon filter in the basic package. Generally most of the cooker hoods available on the market do not include it. If the hood operates in an extraction mode it is better to remove the carbon filter, otherwise it will decrease performance up to 30%.
